Teaching Assistants (TAs) may be appointed at 50% employment (20 hours per week), or at 25% (10 hours per week). Duties vary, but may include running lab or discussion sections, holding office hours, and grading papers and exams. The minimum GPA requirement to hold a TA appointment is 3.00. Graduate students may be appointed to a maximum of 9 quarters in one or a combination of academic titles (e.g. TA, RA, Reader) prior to advancement to candidacy; after advancement, students may be appointed to academic titles for an additional 6 quarters without an exception request. Summer appointments are excluded from these limits. In every quarter except Summer, appointment as a TA alone, or in combination with other University employment, may not exceed 50%.
TAs receive a stipend (income) as well as an in-state fee remission. Current salary information can be found on the Graduate Studies web site at http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/facstaff/. All in-state fees except local fees are remitted by a TAship. Fee information can be found on the Office of Resource Management and Planning web site at http://www.ormp.ucdavis.edu/studentfees/.
For TA positions during the 2009-10 school year, the Section of Evolution & Ecology's priority application deadline has passed. However, we take TA applications year-round and often hire TAs whose applications were submitted after the priority deadline, so please send in those applications even if you've missed the deadline!
Documentation Requirements: The Section of Evolution & Ecology requires the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) application which can be downloaded below. EVE also requires a copy of GRE scores, one set of transcripts from all prior colleges and universities you have attended (copies accepted), a sampling of previous teaching evaluations (if any), and a copy of the Advancement to Candidacy form (if applicable).
College of Biological Sciences Teaching Assistant Application - (MS Word Version 7.0). To apply to more than one Section within the College of Biological Sciences, you must submit a separate copy of this application to each department. TA Training for New TA's
Each year the Teaching Resources Center (TRC) provides a "new TA" orientation in mid to late September before Fall quarter begins. All students (incoming and continuing) who will be TAing for the first time are requested to attend. The course will provide instruction and resources so your TA experience will be a successful and valuable part of your graduate education at Davis.
