General Information for Undergraduates

Academic Disqualification

A student is subject to academic disqualification if they get below a 1.5 GPA for any one quarter. The dean's office can dismiss them once the grades are posted. It behooves the student to visit the CBS advisors to plead their case. The advisors take it to Ellen Tani, and she is the final authority.

Academic Probation

A student who gets between a 1.5-1.99 GPA during a quarter will be on academic probation. If on academic probation for 2 quarters in a row, then they a subject to academic disqualification. That means the dean's office can kick them out once the grades are posted, if they so desire.

Cancellation

Must cancel prior to first day of instruction. After first day of instruction has begun, must withdrawal. Must file for readmission if cancel or withdrawal. Normally, not hard to readmit. Cost for paperwork is $40.

Change of Major

CBS will notify students within two to four weeks of major change.

Concurrent Enrollment

Must petition to CBS for concurrent enrollment. Must provide hardship.

Double Majors

To declare a double major, a student must complete two depth subject matter courses in each major before s/he starts paperwork. Students must file their multiple major petition no later than the end of the quarter before they graduate. Filing in the same quarter as graduation may result in delays.

When deciding the percentage of units that can overlap, do not round up—9.9 units that can overlap equals 9 units that can overlap.

Education Abroad Program (EAP)

Count the credits and grades if the course is listed with grade. The units on the transcripts are those accepted by UC Davis. They have already been converted to quarter units.

Their website is http://eac.ucdavis.edu/

English Requirement

Must complete Subject A requirement, which most students do in high school (see CBS Handout). English 1 or 3 satisfies Sub A and 1st English requirement.

Second half of English requirement: Could take the comp exam, but not recommended for those going to medical or vet school, as they need to show a whole year of English. {For A&ES, you can take anything besides Eng 1&3. They would like it completed before 120 units. For L&S, you must take one each of lines 1 and 2. The 2nd requirement must be completed after 84 units.}

English 102B, Writing in the disciplines: Biological sciences
English 104E, Science writing

Enrolled, No Work Submitted

This can be given to the student who petitioned to get a drop but cannot. The professor decides whether no work has been submitted. Quizzes may or may not count as "work submitted". The professor may only count it if the student has taken an exam. This is reported on the grade sheet.

Foreign Language Requirement (A.B. majors only)

15 unit level credits needed, all from college. The only exception is if foreign language is checked off on IGETC, which may count high school credit. Students may test out of a foreign language.

If student has taken a foreign language in 11th or 12th grade, they can only get P/NP in Spanish/French/Italian I.

General Education

Comp Lit 4 Counts under Arts and Humanities, Diversity, Writing credit or College English Requirement.

Comp Lit 5 Counts under Arts and Humanities and Diversity and Writing.

Entomology 1 † means this course is listed under 2 or more requirements and only satisfies one of these requirements.

GPA

To get into the major, count all courses for major, not just depth subject matter.
(The Chemistry 118 series does not count as upper division units for GPA).

Grades, Repeating

If you get a D, F, or NP, you can take the course at a community college. However, only the units transfer to UC Davis—the original grade still stands. However, a student can show completion of a course this way. If the students wants to get rid of the first grade, the student must take the course at UC Davis.

Incomplete

This grade can be given by a professor if at least 2/3 of the work is done and the student has a passing grade. The student does not need to have a hardship—it is up to the professor. The student just must meet the first two criteria.

IGETC

If students complete IGETC completely at a CC, then they have "completed" GE at UCD. They won't have to take any GE here. If missing 1 course of IGETC, then CBS goes course by course to see if they get credit. Not all of them will count, as there has to be a similar course at UCD. A&ES has special requirements about what counts. If missing just one course, student may be able to take it at the CC and get IGETC checked off. See CBS.

International Baccalaureate

For tests, the scoring is as follows:
5 (int'l test) = 3 (CA test)
6 = 4
7 = 5

Math

16A: Students given formulas and then apply them.
17A: Harder than 16A, not as hard as 21A. Uses biology examples.
21A: Lots of proofs (no bonus points for taking this harder math series).

PELP

Should be done by first day of instruction, but can be done up to 10th. There's just a penalty after instruction has begun. Can PELP up to three quarters and petition for an extension. Can PELP, then take a quarter, then PELP again for another 3 quarters, etc. Costs $40 to apply for PELP. Good thing: they do not have to be readmitted to school. Forms at registrar's office.

Physical Education Units

They can take up to 6 units to count towards 180 unit total. Whatever they exceed 6 by, they must exceed 180 by. If take 8 PE units, then must take 182 units to graduate. The same goes for internships (12 units accepted).

Readmission

Must file for readmission if students withdraws or cancels enrollment. Applying for readmission is done far before the quarter in which they want to start. For example, if they want to come back in Winter, the readmission paperwork must be filed by end of October. See Registrar for official deadlines and paperwork.

Transfer Information

Transfer Articulation Credit 1 year of calculus, 1 year of general chem, 1-3 semesters of BIS 1A-1C. Need min of 2.8 to get in. Suggest take physics and OChem at CC. There are specific courses to take to guarantee admission to UCD. They sign an agreement with a UCD counselor who goes to the CCs about once per week.

Only calculate UCD work/grades when doing GPA check for graduation. Transfer work is not counted in the GPA—they have to have a sufficient grade to come here.

UC Reciprocity

Agreement between all UC universities...if you complete GE at any UC, then GE is done at UCD.

Units

225 is the max. For this total, though, AP units don't count. Subtract them out. In the quarter before they graduate (end of winter qtr for spring graduates) they can't go over 225. CBS is pretty strict, and could cut out a double major, an unnecessary minor, fun classes etc.

Variable Units

Must take upper level (192, 194H, 199 only) after 84 units. If take before, will have to petition to get approved upper division credit. Must be at or over 84 prior to the quarter when you want to take the classes.

Withdrawal

Done after instruction has begun. Must apply to be readmitted. Cost is $40.

Writing

BIS 1C fulfills one of the writing requirements.
